Sometimes when we listen to music, we sense its raison d'être is discreetly intimate. Such is the case for John Mitchell’s midcentury modular project. This emotional privacy was first noticed on the cover art to his debut album, arps: a blurry photograph of a wall of carefully hung pictures that hint at shared lives and lasting memories. However, the music on that album provided an arresting counterpoint to the cover art because those memories are refracted in shards of uncertainty.

Curiously, this piece is an outlier for Mitchell because that anxiety has been replaced with effervescent microcosms of hope. Motion is imbued in this music. Listening to it evokes that same thrill of insignificance felt when looking at a satellite image of the earth, for example, or when watching crowds of people pass while waiting to board a plane. summit 1 is a bold and joyful ode to the ever-changing present moment in all its glorious minutiae.
